Filing a public interest petition is a means for an ordinary person, non-governmental organization, or social worker to seek redress for violations of legal actions. Allows the public to participate in judicial review of administrative decisions. The Supreme Court has established guidelines for the administration and disposition of public interest petitions, and the petitioners’ motives must be noble and not for profit or personal gain.
Public interest litigation is essential for courts, protecting them from legal administration delays and interest groups using them to further their political goals.
However, the misuse of litigation in the public interest is widespread and often leads to delays or even cancellation of actual proceedings. Therefore, the judiciary must issue strict guidelines for such requests.
In 2010, the Supreme Court issued strict guidelines in the Personal Interest Lenses (PIL) case. People used to submit frivolous applications to advertise themselves, which strained the judiciary. These included non-payment of wages, forced labour, women’s rights, environmental pollution, etc.
Several Public Interest Litigations (PILs) are currently pending in Indian courts. These include topics ranging from child abuse to protecting women’s rights, preservation of cultural heritage, preservation of environmental balance, and others.
Recently, the Supreme Court has heard several PILs. One such case was raised by a youth from West Godavari district who questioned the film “RRR,” which distorted the lives of the Alluri freedom fighters Sitarama Raju, Komaram Bheem, and Raju in their role. Therefore, she appealed to the court to stop the film’s release and not issue a censorship certificate.
Nothing can tarnish the reputation of famous people like Alluri Sitaram Raju. Chief Justice Justices Satish Chandra Sharma and Justice Abhinand Kumar Shavali said this in dismissing the public interest petition. They also mentioned that while poison can kill Socrates, his thoughts or literature cannot.
The producers of this film followed the advice of the judges and requested that the censorship board review the movie for any copyright infringement. Furthermore, they urge to take the corresponding measures to avoid controversy in the film. The film’s director stated that the release was initially scheduled for January 7 but was later released due to increased COVID-19 cases. The director claimed that the number of cases would continue to rise and that the film would not have hit theatres if he had.
The Kannada version of the film was given less importance than the Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi versions which is why the “RRR” film is trending on social media. Some people have come out in favor of boycotting the movie in Karnataka.
The film “RRR” has received critical acclaim for its cinematography, direction, action scenes, music, and script. The film has won international awards and is among India’s top ten highest-grossing films.

Recently, the head of the BJP in Telangana, Sanjay Kumar, launched a second attack on this film. He has instructed not to include a scene in the trailer where Junior NTR wears a Muslim cap. This movie is based on human values and includes other famous actors besides Junior NTR. However, targeting Junior NTR wearing a Muslim cap in the film’s trailer is unacceptable. All religions, castes, and communities have equal status in our society.
The BJP claims this will never lead to a political division between tribal communities and people from Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Maharashtra. In addition, the Telangana BJP has threatened to burn down any cinema if a character in the film is portrayed as Muslim. The Telangana High Court has now ordered the filmmakers to bring the film back until Alluri Seetha Rama Raju and Komaram Bheem’s image is damaged in any way. It will be interesting to see her response to the court’s request.
